Farewell to FSgt Irvine

2180 Sq said goodbye to Flight Sergeant Brian Irvine who is leaving the Squadron tom take up a post in the Aerospace Industry at Humberside Airport. FSgt Irvine has been with 2180 for a relatively short time but even so has become a valued member of staff and has made a huge contribution to the development of the Squadron, Saying farewell and good luck, the Squadron presented Brian with an engraved tankard  as a reminder of his time with 2180 Squadron.

Normandy Trip 2012

The trip to Normandy in July 2012 is progressing well and Staff and Cadets from 2180 now need to make a form commitment to applying for a place. There are four squadrons involved so it’s not too difficult to figure out how many places we may get. As places are limited it may be that all who wish to go might not get a place. This is quite an expensive trip but with fundraising we can reduce the individual cots to around £200 - £300 or lower with more effort.

We need to know who wants to go no later than 18 January.

The details I have for the trip are as follows

Meet at 870 Sqn evening of the Friday 20th Jul ready for departure by coach to our destination of Chateau du Tertre via Dover and Calais. Individuals will likely be responsible for getting themselves to  and from 870 Sq in 301 Colinton Rd Edinburgh next to Redford Barracks  NOT Dreghorn Barracks

Arrive mid to late afternoon of Saturday 21st Jul

       Friday 27th Jul

Depart Chateau du Tertre for return journey via Calais and Dover

Return to 870 to be confirmed by the coach company.

Total size of party will be 39

       Individual cost will be £550

This will be made up from £350 paid by each person.

Then from fundraising / grants an additional £200

Once places are confirmed a payment of £100 should be paid no later than 15th Feb 2012

Total individual payments to be complete by 1st  May 2012 and paid to 2180 (Galashiels ) Sqn ATC a consolidated cheque will then be sent to 870 Sq

2180 needs to continue fundraising to further reduce costs

ASDA BAG PACK

Team 2180 raised an amazing £1105.95 - plus 1Euro 18 Cents -  at a bag pack in ASDA Galashiels on 22 Dec . Twenty cadets supported by eight staff, Civilan Comittee Members and parents  raised the money to help pay for trip to Normandy in July 2012 to undertake a Battlefield Tour and to study the role of the RAF in the Liberation of Europe. The trip is being planned for late July 2012 and will see 2180 Squadron join with friends at 870 (Dreghorn) Squadron. The funds raised to date exceed £1700.00 with donations being made by the Royal British Legion Galashiels Branch, Royal British Legion Galashiels Branch Ladies Section, Galashiels Rotary Club and the proceeds of a table Top  Sale at St Peter's Church in November. Other fund raising events are planned with a view toi reducing the cost of the trip so as to involve as many cadets as possible. DEp OC Fg Off Nik Wielbo explained: "We do a lot about the history of the RAF as part of our training programme and with the SDSR begining to impact places at Annual Camps are becoming hard to get in any large numbers. Planning our own "Summer Camp"  where we take the cadets away and link the exercise  to part of our training programme seems to be a logical step forward. Working with the 870 Team is a regular occurrence as we have shared a few Camps with them and we have a very good working realtionship with our friends in Edinburgh. A trip to France , battlefield tours and looking at the role played in  D-Day and  it's aftermath will give the cadets a great experience from a number of angles."

Remembrance Weekend

The weekend nearest to 11th November is a busy weekend for Air Cadets from Galashiels. Saturday 12th November was Poppy Saturday and 2180(Galashiels) Squadron was, as usual,

out and about Galashiels armed with collecting boxes and lots of blood red poppies. The day is arranged by the Ladies Section of the Royal British Legion Galashiels Branch. Twenty one cadets supported by staff and Civilian Committee members collected £2484.33 for Poppy Scotland.

Sunday 13th was Remembrance Sunday and 2180 arrived at the Squadron at 0945 to

prepare for a Church Parade at St Peter’s Church next to the Squadrons HQ in Galashiels.  Several cadets did readings during the service and a Poppy Wreath was hung on the War Memorial in the Church, The Squadron Banner was on parade and the Cadets and staff left the church to a rousing rendition of  the hymn “God is our strength and refuge” t which is sung to the tune of the Dambusters.

A quick regroup and 2180 quickly moved to Galashiels Town Centre and the Towns Remembrance Parade and a service and wreath laying at the War Memorial at the Border Reiver Monument. On the march back to the Royal British Legion there was a quick stop to plant crosses in the Garden of Remembrance. 2180 planted two crosses in remembrance of two RAF officers from Galashiels who gave their lives during WWII Plt Officer TF Dorward RAFVR a pilot with 25 Squadron who is buried in Galashiels and Fg DL Skinner DFC RAF who is buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery in Egypt. Then it is back to the start and some hot soup and warm sausage rolls courtesy of the Royal British Legion Galashiels Branch.

NOT A&E - Just 2180 doing First Aid Training

No its not Accident and Emergency at the Borders General Hospital - it just cadets from 2180 (Galashiels) Squadron doing one of their twice yearly Youth First Aid Courses. The two day courses are delivered by the OC and Adj 2180 Sq and will be assessed by WSO Flt Lt Jim Henderson. The courses last a minimum of 12 hours with asessments carried out on the afternoon of the second day. There is never a problem finding victims on which to practice first aid as since the Squadron acquired a Casualty Simulation Kit Cadets queue up to be dressed in a variety of wounds . Haloween aslo provides the Squadron with the opportunity to acquire a supply of freshly produced body parts in the form of severed limbs, feet and hands all readily avialable in local supermarkets among the pumpkins, dookin' apples, tumshies and nuts. The body parts are of course plastic and are usually found among the various Haloween costumes and related fare

Top Appointment for Mark

One of the most important and public positions any Air Cadet can be appointed to is the prestigiuos post of Lord Lieutenants's Cadet. In the 70th Anniversary Year of the Corps and of 2180 Sq Flight Sergeant Mark Robertson the  Senior NCO at 2180 (Galashiels) Sq has been appointed Lord Lieutenants Cadet for Roxburgh, Ettrick & Lauderdale and will accompany Lord Lt Gerald Maitland-Carew on ceremonial and other duties throughout the area for the next year. The Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet will support the Lord Lieutenant on special occasions such as Royal Visits and Remembrance Sunday and other Official Engagements.

The position of Lord Lieutenant in Scotland adted back to the early 1700s it was not until 1794 that permanent Lieutenancies were established by Royal Warrant. The Militia Act of 1794 saw  the lieutenants appointed "for the Counties, Stewartries, Cities, and Places" and they were given powers to raise and command county militia units.  While in their lieutenancies, lord lieutenants are among the few individuals in Scotland officially permitted to fly the banner of the Royal Arms of Scotland or The Lion Rampant as it is more commonly known

Nominated by Squadron Staff t

he citation for the appointment reads:-

Mark, aged 16yrs 11 months, joined the Air Cadets in February 2008 and is a very loyal and committed cadet. Mark from Innerliethen is a senior pupil at Peebles High School and plans to study medicine at university and hopes to eventually join the RAF.

Mark was presented with his certificate and Uniform Badges at a special ceremony at Squadron Headquarters by Lord Lt for Roxburgh, Ettrick & Lauderdale Gerald Maitland-Carew when he visited the Squadron and viewed the range of activities on offer.

At the invitation of Lothian & Borders Police, Cadets from 2180 mounted a recruitment and display  of Squadron activities at the Youth & Community Day at Selkirk Swimming Pool on the first Friday of the Borders school summers break. The event was designed to show local young people a wide range of activities that they could become involved in during the long summer break and beyond.

Team 2180 demonstrated Flight Sim backed up with live Air Traffic Control Radar via the Internet and Live Radar via an SBS box and an Air Band Radio. Also on display was a Martin Baker Mk II ejection seat and information boards.

Among the visitors to the 2180 display was Iain Paxton the former Scotland and British Lions No.8 and Lock. Iain, who is Seconds Coach with Selkirk RFC, took timeout from his Rugby Coaching session at the event to speak to cadets and try his hand at flying a Tucano.  Ian is well known to some of the 2180 team as Plt off Nik Wielbo, Deputy OC 2180, is a player with Selkirk RFC and Cpl Bruce Riddell is a member of the Selkirk Youth club Squad who train with the Senior Club

Dan Goes Solo - Galashiels Air Cadet Dan Barns has taken to the skies on his own after being awarded one of only 14 Flying Scholarships available to Air Cadets in Scotland this year under the Air Cadet Pilot Scheme. The Air Cadets provide 130 flying scholarships across the UK on an annual basis but competition is fierce with 40,000 Air cadets hoping to capture a place.

Sgt Dan Barns with his Wings

Dan Barnes from Kelso High school is a Senior NCO cadet at 2180 (Galashiels) Squadron has just returned from spending two weeks Dundee Airport where he has been based with Tayside Aviation who provide the aircraft and tuition for Air Cadets from across the UK.

The Scholarship provided Dan with Dan 12 hours of flying instruction and many more hours of ground school in a Grob 115b Heron single engine two seat training aircraft. So after 12 hours of dual tuition Dan was offered the opportunity to go solo. After the usual round of pre flight checks and with clearance from air traffic control Dan opened the throttle and took off on his own from Dundee Airport for a circuit and landing to qualify for the coveted Wings.

A bonus for Dan came in the form of a visit to the airport by two RAF pilots in a Tucano training aircraft from the Central Flying School at RAF Linton-on-Ouse who arrived to undertake quality assurance checks on the training given to the Air Cadets. Dan was selected to take one of the Central Flying School Instructors for a flight during which he was required to demonstrate the skills and procedures he had learned during the two week training course. An extra hours flying saw Dan  prove to the satisfaction of the RAF Instructor all that he had learned was up to the standards required by the RAF.

Dan who has only recently passed his driving test is a Staff Cadet at 2180 (Galashiels) Squadron and has already flown solo in the Grob Viking Glider to achieve his Silver Wings having completed a Gliding Scholarship Course at HMS Condor Arbroath during the summer of 2010.

The cost of all this to Dan? – Nothing other than a commitment to the Air Cadets, participation in a wide range of adventurous activity, attending camps and enjoying himself.  All Air Cadets who are over 16 years of age can apply for Gliding and Flying Scholarships which include travel, accommodation cots and the full cost of flying training.

Armed Forces Day 2011 - Cadets and staff from 2180 (Galashiels) Squadron were involved in  supporting  the main UK event for Armed Forces Day 2011 which was held in the Queens Park next to the Palace of Holyrood in Edinburgh.

Team 2180 Armed Forces Day Holyrood 2011

The Gala Lads and Lasses were one of only four Air Cadet Squadrons in Scotland invited to attend the main event at Holyrood and were on duty to run the Air Cadet Community Engagement Platform - Flight Simulator and staff an Air Cadet Recruitment Stand.

General Sir David Richards GCB, CBE, DSO, ADC Gen, Chief of the Defence Staff chats to Cdt Aaron Kerr 2180 Sq

Staff and Cadets alike were delighted when General Sir David Richards GCB, CBE, DSO, ADC Gen, Chief of the Defence Staff, who was accompanied by Air Commodore RJ Atkinson ADC, MA, Air Officer Scotland and Station Commander RAF Leuchars, visited the ACE Platform.

Who would have believed it?  To 2180 (Galashiels) Squadron goes the honour of being the last ever Squadron to win the Edinburgh & South Scotland Athletics Championships on the very day the Wing stands down and is consigned to Air Cadet History.

Easter Sunday Gliding for Galashiels Cadets

10 cadets accompanied by two staff travelled to the former Wartime Airfield at Kirknewton just outside Edinburgh to undertake instruction on the Air Cadets primary training glider the Viking.

Include in the day were a few classroom based safety briefings and films but the vast bulk off the day was spent launching and recovering Gliders and then into the cockpit for a number of Launches and the experience of a lifetime.

Each cadet undertook a series of launches where the glider they are in is towed into the air by a fixed winch.

Once the Glider is released the aircraft can remain airborne for up to 20 minutes and reach heights in excess of 2000 ft depending on conditions.

The three launches available to each Cadet aim to see a total in-flight time of about 20 minutes during which the youngsters practice a variety of control movements.

One first time flyer when asked what he thought about the day replied: “It was the most fun thing I have ever done on my life!”

Suspension of Squadron Parades

In view of the potential for continuing severe weather I have decided, in the interests of safety, to suspend Squadron Parades until early in the New Year. There will be no parades until at least Monday 17th January and a resumption of parades on that date will depend entirely on the weather and access to the Squadron at that time.

Why have I taken this decision? - At the moment access to the Squadron is not great, there is  poor access to the Church car park, underfoot conditions around the Squadron are very poor. You are well aware that night-time and incredibly daytime temperatures have been extremely low and while an improvement is imminent it is likely to be some time before the conditions around Squadron premises improves sufficiently to provide access and safe passage. Travelling after dark in low temperatures is not fun. To keep you all informed I will update the 2180 Squadron Web Site with Information on the resumption of parades and other information as it comes to hand.
